Your Friendly Hise Hikers Tuesday Tip: Surrendering: Literally Having Your Life In Someone’s Hands.

In a recent conversation with a friend, she asked me how I was feeling and I shared that I think the best way to describe it is that I’m surrendering.

And that brought me to a moment on the trail about 7 years ago when we were charged by a mama bear.

It was a giant holy moment for me.

To abbreviate the story… the mama bear sent her cub up a tree and charged us at her full speed across this meadow… breaking limbs of trees at least 2-3 inches in diameter like they were toothpicks.

Jason had the presence of mind to tell me to back up the trail slowly and not turn my back on her… which I did.

He yelled “HEY” as loud as I’ve ever heard and while she didn’t slow break her stride, her ears popped up out of defense charge and she turned back toward her cub. Ooof!

Did I mention the giant holy moment?

Yeah.

So, the realization, after my heart rate resumed quasi-normal beating was that LITERALLY at that moment, my actual life was in Jason’s hands… and while it’s all cliche and whatever to say, it is the truth. And holy moly what a way to realize the actual truth of that sentiment!
