Your Friendly Hise Hikers Tuesday Tip: Know Your Body.

After hiking several hundreds of miles on all types of terrain, I’ve gotten to know and deeply understand my body.

For example, I  tend to be one who rolls my ankles, hence, I wear high-top hiking boots. Jason, on the other hand, not-so-much an ankle roller, he wears regular hiking shoes.

Something else I’ve learned and come to appreciate about knowing my body… when I feel the slightest twinge of a cramp in my feet or legs, it means I need salt. Whether that means an extra helping of a salty snack on our next break or I take a salt supplement, I no longer let that feeling slide.

As we have hiked and snow camped and snowshoed, I have also learned the importance of hand warmers. On one of our first snow camping trips, I started to experience the early stages of frostbite on my hands… I made sure to alert one of the trip leaders and got it taken care of: hand warmers and 2 pairs of gloves later… luckily, I didn’t endure any long-term damage. ❄️
