In my business, I am constantly redefining myself, my services and my products in order to stay ahead of or at least keep up with the industry of marketing. If I don’t bring fresh ideas and material to my clients regularly, then someone else will.

Most entrepreneurs are not taking the time to work “on” their businesses, therefore they tend to struggle and stress out “in” it. Often times saying “I’m too busy” yet what they may be doing isn’t being productive.

As a small business, you have to wear many hats but your sales and marketing hat is the single-most important hat you wear. How much time are you spending wearing that hat?

Here are 3 action steps you can take to work more “ON” your business so you can be more productive and make more money:

Schedule 1 day each month as a “Creative” Day – a day you will do nothing but sit and write down all the ideas that come to mind about how you can update or increase your business, who you know that you can work with, how you will promote the products and services you offer.

Schedule another day each month as an “Implementation” Day – a day you will do nothing but put those ideas into action – updating the text on your websites, writing and distributing press releases or email promotions, planning a workshop, developing marketing materials, etc.

Schedule weekly time to work “ON” your business – typically I recommend a minimum of 2-4 hours each week to spend on marketing, sales, follow up calls, email marketing, strategizing and delegating. This time is in addition to your in-person networking and your customer appointments. If you’re not very busy now then spend more like 60% of your work week on these revenue-generating tasks.
